The Business You Meant to Build
From The Playbook
The other day I drove past a building where a business used to be.
Nothing special about it. Just one of those moments that makes you stop and think.
I found myself wondering what it felt like the day they first opened the doors. The excitement. The uncertainty. The conversations about what the business might become.
Every business starts that way.
There’s a picture in someone’s mind of a future that looks different from today.
I think most owners can still remember that feeling.
The problem is, life has a way of replacing vision with responsibility.
Clients need things. Employees need answers. Equipment breaks. Bills need to be paid. Before long, most of your attention goes toward whatever needs you today.
That’s part of owning a business.
But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to stop thinking about what you were trying to build in the first place.
I’ll sometimes ask an owner what they ultimately want from their business.
Not how much revenue they want.
Not how many locations.
What do you actually want the business to give you?
It’s surprising how often that question takes a minute to answer.
Most of us didn’t start a business because we wanted more problems to solve.
We were chasing something.
Maybe it was freedom. Opportunity. Security. More time with family. Or simply the chance to build something of our own.
Whatever it was, it mattered enough to take the risk.
I think it’s worth remembering that every once in a while.
Because it’s hard to know whether the business is taking you where you want to go if you’ve forgotten why you started.
Sometimes looking forward starts with remembering what mattered in the beginning.
Make Your Move
Find 30 quiet minutes this week and forget about the numbers for a moment.
Ask yourself:
If this business worked exactly the way I wanted it to, what would it make possible in my life?
Don’t answer with revenue, locations, or production numbers.
Think about what you actually wanted the business to create for you.
Then ask yourself whether the business you’re building today is moving you closer to that.
Your Next Step
Sometimes you know you want something different from your business, but you’re not sure what the next step looks like.
That’s where a conversation can help.
We’d like to learn more about where you are today, what you want the business to become, and what you ultimately want it to make possible in your life.
From there, we can talk about Maverick Growth, how we work with owners who are ready for that next stage, and whether it could be the right fit for you and your business.
Your friend,
Dave
