Work Yourself Out of a Job
Apr 14, 2025As an entrepreneur, you will always be looking to go to the next level. Regardless of the success you have achieved.
Most of us have worked our way up from the bottom, learning the technical parts of our business. Customer service, cleaning, pressing, inspection, assembly, bagging, and maintenance.
Then we learned to manage other team members who are tasked with handling those technical jobs.
The more we delegated, the faster our team moved. At some point, we realized we were actually holding back the productivity of our team.
Many drycleaners get stuck here, managing their team and the daily operations of the business. They are tied to the daily operations of the business.
But those hungry for more growth and freedom learn to delegate the management of team members, too.
Having delegated the technical jobs, and the management of these jobs, almost all business owners take the seat of Business Development.
The more they have removed themselves from daily operations, the quicker they learn more top line revenue is needed to grow.
Those owners in the top 15% of our industry primarily focus on two things – business development (growth from marketing) and financial efficiency (cash flow).
These are the companies in each market that are growing, and acquiring competitors. They are getting a consistent flow of new clients, are getting their current clients to come more often and spend more, and they effectively re-engage lost clients.
Even business development can be delegated and systemized. The top 1% of the industry have done this.
The end result?
They own an investment – a business that provides cash flow and is growing in value. They can sell it at top value whenever they wish. They usually don’t, because it gives them everything they want.
The business operates and grows without their daily input.
You, as the owner, can help and benefit the organization with effective leadership and strategic thinking.
This is exactly what I have done.
I have systemically worked myself out of a job. It doesn’t do much for the ego. You are constantly becoming less needed, but this also gives you all the freedom you desire.
There were a lot of bumps along my journey.
Some of these bumps set me back and almost derailed my goal of creating a self-operating and self-growing company.
You will have a lot of bumps along the way, too.
This is where it is helpful to have a group of like-minded peers or a mentor to help you through the ups and downs of your journey.
