The definition of “marketing” from the Oxford Languages is The activity or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
 
Let me give you some additional ways to think of marketing:

Marketing is:

• What you say (the message)
• Who you say it to (the market)
• Where you say it (the media)

Marketing is applied psychology

Marketing is storytelling

Marketing is the quickest path to the sale

Marketing is selling in advance

Marketing is what you do to get someone on the phone or face-to-face with you properly positioned so by the time they are talking to you they are pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and pre-disposed to give you money in exchange for the value you are delivering
