Revenue Can Hide a Lot of Problems
Revenue is an interesting number.
It’s probably one of the first numbers business owners talk about when they talk about how the business is doing.
“How much are you doing?”
“We’re up 12%.”
“We had our biggest month ever.”
And don't get me wrong. Growing revenue is a good thing.
But I've also seen businesses doing more revenue than they ever have while the owner is wondering why there never seems to be any money left.
That's when the number starts getting a little less impressive.
Because revenue can hide a lot of things.
You can be doing more volume while labor keeps climbing. You can add a route that looks great on the top line but isn't producing what you thought it would. You can have equipment that's costing more and more to keep running. You can discount your way into more pieces without actually creating much more profit.
From the outside, the business looks like it's growing.
Inside, it can feel like you're running faster just to stay in the same place.
I think that's one of the traps of growth.
More feels like better.
More clients. More pieces. More employees. More trucks. More locations. More revenue.
Those are easy things to see.
What's harder to see is what all that "more" is actually creating.
I've talked with owners who were proud of the size of their business but frustrated by what the business was giving them in return.
They had built something bigger.
I'm not sure they had built something better.
And I think that's worth paying attention to.
Because the goal isn't to build the busiest drycleaning business you possibly can.
It's to build a healthy one.
One that can invest in good people. Replace equipment when it needs to. Handle a difficult month without creating panic. Give the owner options instead of just more responsibility.
Revenue matters.
It just doesn't tell the whole story.
Sometimes the numbers that make us feel the best are the same ones keeping us from looking at the numbers that matter most.
