Does Direct Mail Work?


Direct Mail is my top choice to acquire new clients – for a number of reasons.

For target clients, we usually do not have their cell phone number – and a phone call or text would not be warmly received if the prospect does not trust us yet – which they don’t.

We could probably find their email if we really tried – scrubbing websites, news articles, or LinkedIn. But again, the email would likely be deleted because we would be showing up unannounced and have no trust established yet.

If we showed up in a Direct Message on one of a number of social channels, we would come across as desperate and acting like a stalker.

Don’t get me wrong – I have tried all of these methods before. People have told me the pros and cons of contacting them in one of these ways.

Direct mail is different. We can show up in a relatively uncongested place, capture the prospect’s attention, provide them irresistible offers, and do it in a non-salesy way.

Direct mail takes a little more work. Getting a good list. Suppressing off your current clients. Designing an impactful ad or letter, and getting it mailed out.

Direct mail takes the most work. That is why it is the most uncongested. Most of your competitors are looking for the easiest and cheapest way to acquire a client. I am suggesting you do the complete opposite – do the work direct mail requires and spend more than your competitors to get a new client.

By doing this, you are showing up in a class of one and can create very personalized messaging. You can come across as a Welcomed Guest instead of an Annoying Pest.

Both a 6x9 postcard and an Executive sales letter (monarch-sized) can provide a steady flow of new, right-fit clients for your business – as long as the offers are irresistible and the messaging is personalized.
