Watching the Bobber
From The Playbook
A few years ago, I heard someone describe life as being like a bobber floating down a river.
That image has stuck with me ever since.
A bobber doesn't choose where it goes. It simply reacts to the current. One minute it's drifting along, the next it's caught behind a rock or being pulled in a different direction.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that's how many business owners operate.
Not because they want to.
Because every day seems to bring something new, a staffing issue, a client complaint, an equipment breakdown, or another fire that needs putting out. Before long, reacting becomes the job.
The problem is that being busy can feel a lot like making progress.
But movement and direction aren't the same thing.
I've watched owners work harder every year while feeling less excited about their business than ever before. They aren't lacking ability. They've simply spent so much time reacting that they've stopped intentionally leading.
Businesses don't drift toward stronger teams, healthier cultures, higher profits, or greater freedom. Those things happen because an owner decides where the business is going before the day decides for them.
One of the best questions you can ask yourself is this:
Am I intentionally building my business... or am I just reacting to whatever comes next?
That single question has a way of changing your perspective.
Because the current is always moving.
The question is whether you're leading your business or simply floating with it.
Make Your Move
Before Monday starts, spend 30 uninterrupted minutes thinking instead of reacting.
No phone.
No email.
No interruptions.
Just ask yourself:
"What is the one decision I've been avoiding that would have the biggest impact on my business?"
Then make a plan to address it this week.
Leadership starts long before the next emergency shows up.
Your Next Step
If reading this made you realize you've been spending more time reacting than leading, you're not alone.
That's one of the most common conversations I have with business owners.
The good news is that it doesn't have to stay that way.
Sometimes the biggest step forward isn't working harder, it's getting clear on where you want your business to go and deciding what the next chapter should look like.
If you're wondering what that next step could be, let's have a conversation.
We'll talk about where you are today, where you'd like your business to be, and whether Maverick Growth is the right fit to help you get there.
If it is, we'll show you what that journey looks like.
If it isn't, we'll tell you that too.
