The Business People Think About First
From The Playbook
I was talking with someone recently who needed a recommendation.
Before I could answer, someone else at the table said,
"You ought to call..."
And they named a business.
It made me smile because every town has one.
Every industry does.
There's always that one business people think of first.
What's interesting is that it isn't always the biggest business.
It isn't always the oldest.
And it certainly isn't always the cheapest.
Somehow, they've earned a permanent place in people's minds.
I've thought about that a lot over the years.
I don't think it happens because of one great advertisement.
Or one social media post.
Or one successful promotion.
I think it happens because of hundreds of small moments.
Showing up when you said you would.
Doing what you promised.
Solving problems the right way.
Treating people well, even when it's inconvenient.
Trust doesn't happen all at once.
It compounds.
So does your reputation.
Every interaction is an opportunity to reinforce what people already believe about your business or to change it.
That's why I've never believed marketing starts with advertising.
I think it starts the moment a client experiences your business.
Because people don't recommend businesses they simply recognize.
They recommend businesses they remember.
And if you consistently give people a reason to remember you, something interesting happens.
One day, someone asks for a recommendation...
And your business is the first one that comes to mind.
Make Your Move
Ask yourself this question:
"If someone in my community needed a drycleaner today, would my business be the first one they'd think of?"
If the answer is no, or even "I'm not sure", don't ask how to advertise more.
Ask how you can become more memorable.
The strongest brands are built through consistency, not coincidence.
Your Next Step
Becoming the business people think of first doesn't happen overnight.
It happens through intentional decisions, consistent execution, and a clear strategy.
If you're ready to build a business that's known for more than just doing good work, let's have a conversation.
We'll talk about where your business is today, where you'd like it to go, and whether Maverick Growth is the right next step to help you get there.
If it is, we'll show you what that journey looks like. If it isn't, we'll tell you that too.
