Watching the Bobber

A few years ago, I heard someone describe life as being like a bobber floating down a river.

That image has stuck with me ever since.

A bobber doesn’t control the current. It reacts to it.

It moves left, then right. Sometimes it gets caught behind rocks. Sometimes it drifts faster than expected. Sometimes it sits still for a while before moving again.

Honestly, I think a lot of business owners live the same way.

Not intentionally.

Just reacting.

Reacting to:

• Staffing problems
• Customer complaints
• Cash flow
• Equipment issues

Or whatever emergency shows up that day. 

At first, it feels normal because business is busy but after enough time passes, many owners realize they’re no longer leading the business.

They’re just floating with the current.

The hard part is that reactive leadership rarely feels dangerous in the moment. In fact, it can feel productive because you’re constantly moving.

Movement and direction are not the same thing.

I’ve seen owners work harder every single year while simultaneously feeling more stuck.

They have more pressure and stress. And less freedom, clarity, and excitement about the future. 

Not because they aren’t capable.

Because somewhere along the way, survival mode became normal.

The truth is, businesses don’t drift toward clarity accidentally.

They don’t drift toward strong culture.

They don’t drift toward healthy teams.

They don’t drift toward freedom.

Those things require intentional leadership, decisions, priorities and direction. 

And most importantly, intentional thinking.

One of the biggest shifts an owner can make is simply stepping back long enough to ask:

“Am I building this business intentionally… or just reacting to whatever comes next?”

That question changes a lot.

Because the businesses that grow in healthy ways usually aren’t built by owners who react to
everything around them.

They’re built by owners who decide where they want to go before the current decides for them.

The current is always moving.

The question is whether you’re intentionally leading... or just floating with it.
