The Profit Advantage of Routes

Mar 09, 2026

For years, retail storefronts were the foundation of the dry cleaning industry. But today, the highest-performing operators are shifting their focus to pickup and delivery routes and for good reason.
Routes aren’t just convenient. They’re more profitable, more scalable, and more predictable.

1. Higher Client Lifetime Value
Industry data consistently shows that pickup and delivery clients spend significantly more than retail walk-in clients. Our Maverick Metrics program reports:

  • 2–5x higher annual spend per route client
  • More consistent weekly usage
  • Longer retention (often 5+ years when service is consistent)

When clients don’t have to drive to you, frequency increases. Convenience drives habit and habit drives revenue.
Routes client also still give you clothing even if the weather turns bad.

2. Lower Occupancy and Labor Costs
Retail stores carry high fixed overhead: rent, utilities, staffing, and idle counter time. In many markets, rent costs alone can consume 8–15% of gross revenue per location.
With routes:

  • One driver can service 200–400 recurring clients
  • Production remains centralized
  • You eliminate the need for additional brick-and-mortar locations

That means more revenue flowing through the same plant, without adding another lease. And the additional costs.

3. Stronger Retention
Retention is where routes really shine. Clients who rely on scheduled pickup and delivery are far less likely to switch providers. Many operators report annual route retention rates of 85–95%, significantly higher than typical retail retention.
Convenience creates stickiness.

Taking Action:
Create a plan to add routes if you don’t currently offer this service.
Retail stores still matter. But if your goal is higher margins, stronger retention, and scalable growth, pickup and delivery should be the engine of your business.
Higher spend.
Lower overhead per dollar.
Better retention.
Greater route density.
The cleaners who dominate the next decade won’t be the ones with the most storefronts, they’ll be the ones with the strongest routes.
At Maverick Drycleaners, we are helping our members grow their routes. If you’re coming to the DLExpo West on March 27-29, drop by and see us at Booth #403. We can show you how routes can help you drop more to the bottom line.

Have a great week!
Dave
