The Clients You Already Have
Jul 27, 2026I've noticed something over the years.
Whenever business slows down, most owners immediately start thinking about how to find more customers.
I understand why.
When the counter is quiet or the routes aren't as busy as you'd like, your mind naturally goes to advertising, promotions, social media, or whatever might bring new people through the door.
There's nothing wrong with that.
I've always wondered why we spend so much time chasing people we've never met while giving so little attention to the people who've already trusted us.
Think about it.
At some point, every one of your best clients walked into your store for the very first time. They decided to give you a chance. They trusted you with something that mattered to them, and hopefully, they walked away thinking, "I'll be back."
Some of them did.
Some of them didn't.
Interestingly, most businesses know exactly how many new customers they brought in last month, but they couldn't tell you how many good clients quietly drifted away.
Nobody announces they're leaving.
Life just gets busy.
Their routine changes.
Maybe they forget.
Maybe another cleaner becomes more convenient.
Maybe they simply haven't had a reason to think about you.
Whatever the reason, they're gone long before most owners realize it.
I've always believed it's easier to stay connected than it is to rebuild a relationship after it's disappeared.
That's true in business, and it's true in life.
The businesses that continue to grow year after year aren't always the ones spending the most money on marketing.
More often than not, they're the ones that never stop taking care of the relationships they've already earned.
I think there's a lesson in that.
Sometimes the biggest opportunity for growth isn't somewhere out there.
Sometimes it's already in your client database.
You just have to remember it's there.
The next opportunity to grow your business may already know your name.
Your friend,
Dave
