Fix the Process, Not the Person

Nov 24, 2025

When it comes to managing your team, most managers try to fix the person when they should be fixing the process.

If someone is not doing their job, there are only five possible reasons.

By sharing this framework with your team members, you can remove the personal blaming and focus on solving the challenge.

  1. They Don’t Know WHEN You Want It
  2.  They Don’t Know WHAT You Want
  3. They Don’t Know HOW To Do It
  4. They Don’t WANT To Do It
  5. Something is BLOCKING Them

Most team members will immediately tell you which one of these five reasons is why someone is not getting their work done.

By knowing this, and getting their buy-in, you can focus on the specific issue that is causing the job not to get done, rather than building resentment by not bringing it up, or by having vague conversations about performance.

When you can help your team get unstuck and moving forward, you are directly supporting them. This empowers your team to get the work done and gives you feedback on how that team member processes information and gets work done.

Have a great week, friends!
